I Heart Huckabees

I watched "I Heart Huckabees" last night and was delighted and bored at the same time. I hate to quote American Idol's Simon Cowell but when I finished watching the movie I was like, "So What".

Now saying that I realize- this is one of those "smart movies" that can be funny on many different levels, but the comedy tends to be much darker like- The Royal Tennenbaums, Lost in Translation, or Sideways. The movie explores topics that are relevant to many but explored by few - nihilism, existentialism and perhaps a touch of hedonism. I had to look up the definition of Existentialism because I find that on many occasions I think I fully understand the meaning of a word, but in reality I do not.

Existentialism- A philosophy that emphasizes the uniqueness and isolation of the individual experience in a hostile or indifferent universe, regards human existence as unexplainable, and stresses freedom of choice and responsibility for the consequences of one's acts. (thank you www.dictionary.com)

I have to admit the movie was entertaining if for no other reason than the interesting actors chosen for the movie. Jude Law, Mark Wahlberg, Lily Tomlin, Dustin Hoffman, are obviously big name actors, but then you have Jason Schwartzman and Naomi Watts who I don't recall being in anything rememberable, however, I will remember them now. Each of the characters were very distinct.

Would I watch this film again? Maybe. Perhaps it is one of those movies that gets better with each watching, but I found, and I admit this without shame, that this movie was quite possibly smarter than me and that I am not an intellectual that can see into the deeper meanings of what's not being said or blatantly being said in a movie. However, in the case of "I Heart Huckabees" I don't think that I really care to know the deeper meaning. If I want philosophy I will read Nietzsche, Francis Bacon, or Karl Marx (or talk to Travis Miller). When I watch a movie I just want to be entertained, I am not trying to explore the meaning of life- I already have the answer to that.

So rent the movie if you want to see something quirky and different and if you have an extra 4.50 to throw out the window.

Much Love.

I find that I really have to be in a certain mood to watch those sorts of movies. Like "Lost in Translation"...I had that same bored but compelled to watch feeling. I don't know if you've ever heard of a band called Mono, but those types of movies remind me of their music. It's like you're floating along in some other dimension and everyone is moving in slow motion. And everyone is so sophisticated and just "gets it." And if you don't "get it" then you feel lost and confused in this floating world. Does that make any sense? Anyways, sometimes I really like to be on that intellectual plane, but at other times it just annoys me. That seems to be my take on everything: I either really like it or it annoys me. Hmmm...self discovery....

eddo, i love your movie reviews! i especially loved that you used the word "existentialism" because i had a writing class my sophomore year at UNT in which this word was used daily by my professor, and he was so obsessive about it that he made us use it in every sentence we spoke in his classroom.

i thought i had completely blocked it out of my memory. thank you for helping to unlock that part of my past.

Jason Schwartzman - Rushmore, another "smart, dark comedy" - personal note I saw this with Lunchmeat and AMA and we thoroughly enjoyed it (I think John really liked it - tells you something about his mind), Naomi Watts - The Ring - one of the most hyped scary movies lately. Just a movie FYI from random knowledge girl

Believe it or not the Chinese is actually Posted Note - I went to Babel Fish, translated Posted Note from Chinese to English, and then made them into a cool graphic.

I use Blogger, this is just another blogger template - it's really nothing special, I just like to update my site design monthly.

And yes, KT, send me some ideas of what you might like and I would love to do a new design for you. I need colors, and a basic feel- smart, sleek, sexy, minimalist, secretarial, whimsical, sassy, fun- how do you want your readers to feel when they come to your site?

Jes- you are a NUT - of course it has nothing to do with pinning down a time for a game night, on the contrary, I was about to tell you that I was open on the 12th when you emailed! Silly Girl!!! :) I can't wait to see you and Roger!

OMW - JES- you are hilarious- KT's design has been in the works for all of 5 minutes!!! HA! I hope I don't disappoint! Roger is way better at Graphics than I am, so hopefully he doesn't see my design and just laugh it all of the face of the planet...

whatever! roger would never do that! you have good designs eddie!

besides, no offense, but i don't think he really reads any one else's blog but mine.

and the fact that he reads mine is only because i force him to. because he knows that every day he will come home, and i will ask him, "Sweetie! Did you read my blog today?" and if his answer is a sheepish "no" then he'll be in for it!

so if you want him to start reading your blog, call him every day and email him everyday to ask him if he's read it yet. it's a lot easier for me to have mastered this, since i live with him. and i guess being married helps, too! heehee! :)

eddie, i know that kt's new re-design has been in the works for only 5 minutes. but you have to hide these things from me, or else i become really anxious because i know that the possibility of them exists out there in the world.

and then i want immediate gratification, because i know that it will happen, and i am excited for it to happen, and i want it to happen. NOW.

too much information to digest and respond to. First off - secretarial - NO WAY. I despise that word maybe because when I tell people I don't teach they automatically assume I'm a secretary. Hello people there are other jobs out there. Eddie I will ponder this future design. I am very deliberate on things so I want it to be just right. OMW you may not want to volunteer to do this for me. Hi Eddie,

Nicolle said that "blogging" might be the best way to get in touch with you. I sent you an email a few days ago regarding a video montage. I wanted to see if you would be interested in creating one for me? Please email me at jmoe80@hotmail.com. Look forward to hearing from you! :) Jamie
