On a Quest for Everquest
I read over on Ben's site that he got Civilization IV for himself with his Christmas cash.
On the radio this week they had women call in who had gotten divorced over their husbands obsession with video games - or one game in particular - Everquest.

I work with computer people, a nerd herd, a nerdery of people, a geek basket, and in this basket there are numerous guys who love computer games. World of Warcraft, Final Fantasy I-XII, Civilization IV, and Age of Mythology seem to be the more popular games right now. All of them seem to involve otherworldly lands and civilizations and they all look like great places to escape to, but I prefer books when I need an escape from reality.
I am not knocking any of you gamers out there, I just hope that you are exercising common sense and decency when you play. One woman said that she went into labor while her husband was playing Everquest and he didn't even stop to drive her to the hospital. Other women said their husbands played non-stop and had nothing to do with them for weeks at a time.
This type of behaviour is foreign to me. I like to unplug and disconnect from reality every now and then, but I don't want to spend more time in a fantasy world than I do in a real one. It seems to me that a video game addiction of this caliber could be akin to alcohol or drug addiction - two things that dull reality and keep you disconnected from actual life.
What about you? Other than blogging what are your addictions?

I liked the "other than blogging", because it goes without saying that we're all addicted.
I'm addicted to a book once I start reading it. I pour all my time into it. So I try to pace myself and not read too often.
I like tv.
LOL.
blogging is enough for me
Eddo Cat is a very lucky woman that you are not a gamer. I feel blessed that my husband is a recovered gamer! Good blog!
I like fooooood! Food is good, but not all good food is good... for you...
Errr...if you've visited my blog you can pretty much tell that isn't much of an addiction(sorry) but my wife has gotten on to me about spending too much time working on photoshop projects! Although that addiction has helped other blogger's addiction! :)
Reading and Running. :)
I grew up with video games, but I have never been so addicted that I would rather stay home than do anything else. There was a high school kid that killed himself just because his character on Everquest died. I read that in some research in my social research class last year.
Eddo-
Can you take a look at my blog? I have changed from haloscan back to blogger commenting, but there is this little line that is driving me crazy. I can't get rid of it.....It is right below the comments. Do you know why this is there or how I can delete the thing?
I have four passions:
1. The Missus
2. My children
3. My extended family
4. Teaching
I know it's somewhat old-fashioned, but its where my energy is directed.
Eddo-
I just wanted to tell you that your mom's site rocks. It is one of my favorites so far. I love it.
Addicted to blogging, writing, reading, walking, and my kids.
O, and Posted Note.
My son foregoes everything for Everquest. I'd call and call to talk to him and could not get his attention because he did not want to loose or die.
How can something so "make believe" have such a grip?
Addictions? Hmmm? Can't think of any at the moment. Guess I am addiction free, however you probably will tell me I am not. lol!!
I have an email addiction. I can't do alot of stuff without checking it.. get up - check it.. watch tv - check it.. leave my room - check it.. you get my drift.
I must admit, I'm hooked on the Sims games. The Sims 2 and Sim city seem to be my biggest vices, but I've taught myself to peel myself away from it when the boyfriend is visiting and stuff and for school work and things of the sort.
4 words - Steer Clear of Everquest!
Goodness gracious that seems like a dangerous game to get hooked on!
Just proves yet again that we become what our focus is.
Ms. Thang - I see your addiction! I'm amazed at how quickly you reply to my emails!! LOL!!
Amstaff mom - me too! I can't read too often because I have to read the book in it's entirety in one sitting!
During my junior and senior years in high school, and throughout most of college, I was severly addicted to an online role-playing-game called DragonRealms.
I would spend several hours each night playing and chatting. That game meant more to me than anything else in my life. It was a retreat and a refuge, filled with people I understood.
What makes it even more pathetic is that it was a text-based game.
All that changed, of course, when I met my wife, and, you know, started living. Since then, nearly six years now, I average maybe two hours of gaming per month, and most of that on my NES or Super NES.
There's just so much more to do.
when i was going through the worst part of my depression, roger and i MADE OUR MARRIAGE SURVIVE by doing this: avoiding each other. I would lay in bed, under the covers, watching TV or staring at the ceiling, my mind reeling in thoughts, and he would retreat to the study to play computer games, because BELIEVE ME, YOU DIDN'T WANT TO BE AROUND ME, OR TALK TO ME, OR EVEN LOOK AT ME, lest i bite your head off and spit it over the balcony.
i was THAT crazy.
Jes-
Your apartment has a balcony?
it has a balcony, AND i almost fell off it one time.
"a nerd herd, a nerdery of people, a geek basket".
When I read this, I almost laughed out loud (except for the fact that I'm at work which might stir up questions and I don't want to have to explain WHAT it was that made me laugh which very obviously wasn't work related... anyway!)
...at which point I momentarily wished that I lived somewhere in the vicinity of Eddo so I can say that I have a friend in the three-dimentional world who is so stinkin' funny and creative that he can come up with the terms "nerdery" and "geek basket" and skillfully use them in a sentence. Now THAT'S talent, my friend.
In your apartment??? Or in your apartment building? You have a 2 story apartment?
Stephanie, thanks for the compliments, you are too kind. One day when we have a bloggerfest in Texas you will have to come!
Oh Eddo, it's already in the works. The wheels (mine and K-T's) are collectively turning on that one right now: I'm trying to decide on a date which would work for my boss and then...
off I go to be Texa-fied (?)! Or something like that... haha I just do NOT plan on consuming NEARLY as much fried food as Steve did. Yuck! So I'll be popping in when the state fair ISN'T happening. haha
BBQ pringles...I'm totally addicted, and lately PEZ candy
It is interesting that you posted this. Yesterday in a book I am reading it was talking about commitment vs. Surrender to God. On how we as Christians cannot just make a commitment. Then we are holding onto the control and choosing the commitment and not Jesus himself. Romans 14:7-8
Thanks this was a good reminder as to where we are as Christians and that we should give the control to God.
no, ben, i don't have a balcony IN my apartment. because then, what would i be balcony-ing over?
but my apartment isn't two stories either. my apartment BUILDING is two stories, and i am on the second floor, and i have a balcony attached to my apartment but that is on the exterior of the apartment.
why am i explaining this?
Ahhhh... thought you had a balcony in your appartment... looking over your living room or something.... I was thinking that your apartment was something grand.
HA!
#1 Addicted to genealogy. It sounds a bit tedious or out of my genre, but I have lots of weird and amazing relatives
#2 Addicted to taking photos. Where I go, camera goes, too.
#3 Addicted to music. Yes, that would be me in Borders sipping a venti, skim, no-foam latte wearing headphones and lounging on the floor next to an enormous stack of CDs to sample a listen.
I was addicted to Total Burnout3 Takedown Revenge on Xbox but it got the the point where I couldn't see the TV with the massive laundry pile in front of it and the kids were just complaining all the time from having to run around naked.
(for those who don't know me, I'm completely kidding. I only do laundry when it's a huge pile AND smelly)
Wonderful and informative web site.I used information from that site its great.
