I Give Up!

A year ago today I gave up Dr. Pepper. Alan Meadows said it best, "God created the world in 6 days and when he was done he saw that it was good and he shed a tear and he bottled that tear and called it Dr. Pepper."

I love Dr. Pepper, so much so that I used to drink 4-6 12 ounce cans of the stuff a day! I am surprised my kidneys still work. I used to go out and eat and I would get refill after refill of this heavenly beverage and when the meal was over I am sure I consumed a minimum of 4 glasses in one sitting - sometimes more.

I know you might think I am joking, but I am not when I say that I was addicted to Dr. Pepper the way some people are addicted to other drugs. It was the sugar-caffeine combination that held me in it's grip and I couldn't not break free.

For me, I have to quite some things cold turkey. I can't just have a glass of Dr. Pepper once a week or once a month - no, if I start, I have to drink and drink until I am in a sugar induced coma with adult onset diabetes. That is why I had to completely give them up.

So with the dawn of my 1 year no Dr. Pepper Anniversary, I decided to give something else up. A friend of mine suggested I give up potatoes and I think that is what it will be unless the internet gives me a better suggestion.

Can I give up potatoes? I don't know, but I do know that they are about as unhealthy as Dr. Pepper. Oh, and I am NOT giving up chocolate - that would be an unfathomable feat that would take my death to accomplish.

So what unhealthy item should I give up?

I think that since your body is so sensitive to carbs, and particularly those from potatoes, this is a good choice. And it shouldn't be too hard to give up. But, does it include yams? Because that would just be sinful. Yummmmmm....yams with marshmallows, or yams with brown sugar and craisins. i'm hungry.

Yams? Ewwww. Jes you are cracked.

Eddie-

If you give up potatoes... then you can't eat french fries... I couldn't live without french fries.

But if you have to give up anything... give up yams.

I can't imagine giving up potatoes! Potatoes in themselves are not evil - it is how they are prepared and what toppings are put on that are the real culprits. I love the golden potatoes, they have a taste that is almost buttery, and don't need much else other than a little shake of salt and pepper. I would give up french fries and potato chips. They are high in fat and not high in much else nutritious.

I'm with you on the chocolate, eddo. I could never never NEVER give up chocolate.

Great new pic! I always loved Dr. Pepper as a kid, but started drinking diet (for my figure) and at the time there was no such thing as Dr. Pepper so I got hooked on Diet Coke and Diet Pepsi and still can't get on the Diet Dr. Pepper bandwagon, due to habit.

I wouldn't give up potatoes for anything in the world. Remember, moderation in all things is my motto, but it's a pretty darned good one, IMHO.

If you're going to give up something that's bad for you, give up second-hand smoke. ;o)

Welcome back to the land of milk and honey!

If I try to give up something, it just makes me crave it more. So I don't.

I couldn't give up potatoes. I've been skillet frying them with kosher salt and coarse black pepper. Brian and I have found a new favorite side dish! Oops, I just realized this probably isn't helping you.

And yes, I'm off today, but I'm addicted to blogging, so here I am.

Potatoes. I say try it and keep the yams. These are actually very healthy and stifle your craving of any type of sugar since they are naturally sweet. Potatoes are a starch and aid in adding pounds especially if they are fried! With the Lord's help I bet you could definitely do it!

I wouldn't give up potatoes. God calls food good (Acts 10) and gluttony bad. (Proverbs 23:2)

Give up portion sizes instead. Eat half a large plate or eat on a child's plate. This is also how John Travolta gets into shape for his movies...well, that and a personal chef, a gourmet kitchen and a personal trainer, but ASIDE from that. It's the portions.

PS. Thanks for the props Eddo!!

I gave up Pepsi about 2 years ago. I was drinking three of the Big Slam bottles a day. I instantly dropped about 10 lbs.
My new "give up" is any white food...potatoes, rice, bread, etc.
It seems to be working too!

Whatever you give up, you should replace with a shot of espresso. I know a lot of folks in Miami who are over 70 (some in their late 80s) who take two shots of espresso a day. They play dominoes and smoke cigars, too, but don't try that combo...or you might turn Cuban. LOL

I suggest giving up "giving up" things. Moderation has it's fine points, but to quote my favorite author (and a prize to the first person to correctly identify the paraphrased quote), "Moderation is for monks! Excess is the zest of life!"

Be happy. Give up whatever it takes to make yourself happy. Just don't advertise your hair shirt.

Potatoes are fine. It's the frying, buttering, cheese-slathering that's a problem.

I'd just give up french fries (sorry, Ben) and eat your baked or roasted potatoes with some hot sauce and feta cheese!

Give up potatoes. You can really make cool french fries with yams and sweet potatoes. (Lower glycemic index too)

Go to diet Dr. Pepper. It is one diet drink that is as good as (not the same as) the original

I figure that I am going to die anyways so I am going to eat what I want, but I will at least keep it in moderation so I can see my grandkids.
