Would You Change?

This is a great song by Tracy Chapman. It is one of my favorites of hers because it asks so many good questions - deep questions - it really makes you think.

Download it here.

If you knew that you would die today,
Saw the face of god and love,
Would you change? Would you change?

If you knew that love can break your heart
When you're down so low you cannot fall
Would you change?Would you change?

How bad, how good does it need to get?
How many losses? How much regret?
What chain reaction would cause an effect?
Makes you turn around,
Makes you try to explain,
Makes you forgive and forget,
Makes you change?Makes you change?

If you knew that you would be alone,
Knowing right, being wrong,
Would you change?Would you change?

If you knew that you would find a truth
That brings up pain that can't be soothed
Would you change?Would you change?

How bad, how good does it need to get?
How many losses? How much regret?
What chain reaction would cause an effect?

Makes you turn around,
Makes you try to explain,
Makes you forgive and forget,
Makes you change?Makes you change?

Are you so upright you can't be bent?
If it comes to blows are you so sure you won't be crawling?
If not for the good, why risk falling? Why risk falling?

If everything you think you know,
Makes your life unbearable,
Would you change?Would you change?

If you'd broken every rule and vow,
And hard times come to bring you down,
Would you change?Would you change?
If you knew that you would die today,
If you saw the face of God and love,
Would you change?Would you change?
Would you change?Would you change?

If you saw the face of God and love
If you saw the face of God and love
Would you change?Would you change?

Hm.

Change is Hard. I don't like change... but I have been doing a lot of changing because I know that it will lead me closer to God's love.

So yes... I am changing... but the song seems to imply that all you have to do is "change." My perspective is that change is an ongoing process... a daily process. I think the key is that you have to be willing to take steps in the right direction.

My 2 cents.

Love, love, love Tracy Chapman.

They're great questions. What would it take to make you change? To stop what you're doing, especially if you know it's wrong or bad for you? To stop seeing that abusive person? To start believing in yourself? To start believing in anything? Most of us can't answer that.

Chapman's a great songwriter. But how about Lisa Stansfield? This song celebrates lack of change. Anyway, your post reminded me of it and I love it. I won't curse you w/ the whole thing, just the chorus:

If I could change the way I live my life today
I wouldn't change a single thing
'Cos if I change my world into another place
I wouldn't see your smiling face

Awesome song...she is so talented.

I agree with Ben- change is definitely an ongoing process, but we all must start somewhere. :)

Tracy Chapman is one of my favorite artists! I love artists that can keep you entertained and keep you in deep thought at the same time.

Change is inevitible, and it's an ongoing process. Change is also beautiful when you allow it to transform you!
