The Unwritten Law

There is an unwritten law that you don't talk about how much you make. Why is that?

One thing that I have learned in my 30 years on this planet is that the more money you make the more people expect from you. I made the mistake when I was younger telling people that I made 35 dollars an hour. Suddenly, whenever I went to lunch with my friends I was the one they expected to either pick up the tab or at least pay for the appetizer. Most of the time I was glad to do it, but the problem came with the expectation. I remember eating lunch one time with a couple of guys I hadn't seen in a while and both of them dropped about 5 hints during lunch for me to pick up the tab. I had been planning on picking up the tab all along, but when they kept dropping hints it sort of took the fun out of paying.

So last week I was listening to The Ticket and they listed all of these people's salaries that are public information. I think it is interesting how some information is made public for everyone, but the majority of us guard the amount we make the way we gaurd a dirty secret. However, unlike a dirty secret we want people to have some idea of the amount that we make - don't we?

Isn't that why we drive a certain type of vehicle or live in a particular house? Even our clothes are dead giveaways to the type of income that we have. We are such an ego-centric culture that we scream "look-at-me!" with our Rolex watches, our Manolo Blahniks and even our coffee.

Part of the reason I bring this up now is because yes, recently I got a raise, but after I looked at the new tax bracket that I am in I am going to be making very close to what I was already making. My new salary is somewhere between what a mexican day-worker makes and what Dirk Nowitzki makes... but it is much closer to the day worker.

I make $45,000 give or take a few hundred dollars... but with 4 little mouths to feed... I might as well be a Mexican Day worker... at least they would be out there right beside me... hoeing bean fields. That would increase my wage a little...

Anyway... don't expect me to pay the tab the next time we go out... I'll pay for what I eat and you pay for what you eat... unless it's pizza.... then we can each pay half. I would feel ridiculous trying to figure out the cost of each slice of pizza and then multiplying by the number of pieces I ate.

Ben, don't you have like 8 Grad degrees? You should be making 6 figures with all that education!

I am SUMO impressed that you are raising a family of 5 on that Salary. I have trouble raising just myself on what I make, I can't imagine adding 4 kids and wife!! AAAAACK!

What I have learned in my numerous years is this...

The people that place their self worth on their money usually are the ones that are hurting on the inside the most.

I had a very high paying job and I was a single man with no kids... I bought everything I wanted at any time. I bought a house and then I lost the job.

I make roughly 50K less now. I took a little pay cut. I am a better man for it.

I think God just wanted to prepare me for full time ministry!

Ha I can say with almost all assurance that I make less than all three of you guys. Not that I'm giving a number.

Though I am trying to make people think I make more by carrying around an old starbucks coffee cup with the boring stuff we make here at the school.

We do well between my hubby and I. The problem is our debt is larger then our income. This is not good. It is a huge burden that I think about often.

Love what Steve had to say.

I think God wants us to be content where we are and trust Him. He wants us to be good stewards, to be obedient. All lessons I know, but don't apply. :( :(

I do often wonder what my coworkers make though - not a good curiosity to have!

As a teacher in this part of Florida, we start at $32,000. It will then take 12 years to break the $40,000 mark. How sad is that?
