Grad School = Girls

This wasn’t something I gave a lot of thought to when I enrolled at UTD. I imagined long classes and lots of homework. Tests, group projects, and a lot of reading were going to be the only things I had to look forward to when going back to school. So how did I forget about the girls?

Everywhere I turned there were cute girls, some bundled up in hoodies, some in those furry boots and jeans and a gorgeous black woman behind the counter where I was getting my student ID. She was so pretty I felt almost compelled to ask her, “What’s your sign?”

I imagined us sipping wine by a fireplace, what our kids would look like, and how she would sound when she laughed at my jokes.

I took my student ID and left the student union building. As I walked down the stairs I noticed a plethora of cuties. It wasn’t until this moment that I realized how working at TI and staying in my same circles that I am so very rarely exposed to attractive single 20 somethings – especially ones that are educating themselves.

Right now I am too busy getting training to be the next Football star, but in the meantime, while at Grad School, I’ll be enjoying the scenery.

Aiden Observations Stories

Dear Aiden,

Hey Boog, you’re 2 years old now and you are starting to really talk. When I took you to Halli’s 2nd Birthday party you repeatedly said “No” when I tried to put you in the bounce house. You would see the other kids in there and you would take your shoes off and start to climb in the entrance and then you’d get scared and start crawfishing quickly repeating “no, no, no, no, no, no, no,” and shaking your head as if I was trying to force you into a blender – head first.

Even though you never got into the bounce house you delighted yourself by pulling a wagon around the gym and when you got bored with pulling, you enjoyed riding. I don’t get to see you as much as I like and so I would have pulled you around that gym until my arms fell off.

When it was time for Halli to open all her presents you thought you would help. You found a ball that you thought might be yours and you brought it to me and said, “Ball”. I told you yes it was a ball but it was Halli’s. You seemed to be having so much fun that you didn’t mind putting the ball back, but when I wasn’t looking you thought you would steal a bow. I have to admit there were a lot of kids there but you were one of the cutest.

Later we played a game of hide and seek and at one moment you squeeled with delight and I pick you up so fast and hurled you… right into a light hanging from the ceiling. Uncle Eddie often forgets how tall he is and your head seems to take a beating everytime I am around. You cried and I felt so bad because we were having so much fun. But this is a good time for you to learn that sometimes life delivers a bump on the head even from someone that loves you so much that he would give you everything, even his life, to make you happy.

My favorite thing is still watching you dance. Dancing has always been something that has been such a special part of my life. When I am down I can always dance and the world disappears and I don’t remember bumps on the head or kicks in the butt. For a brief moment there is a calm and a serenity and so much joy. That is a gift and I am so happy that you like to dance because sometimes life is hard and sometimes an escape is good, even if it is for a moment.

Grandma calls me often and since you have been living with her you seem to be all that she talks about. You are a bright light in our lives and I never fully understood the power of a child. The sweet innocence, the simple joys in discovery and exploration, and how when you do something sweet, when you rub my face, or lean into me for a moment I feel like God himself has reached down and brushed my cheek and said I love you.

I will always be there if you need me.

Love,

Uncle Eddo

Famous Numbers

Avogadro’s number = 6.0221415 × 10^23 This was recently used in the book “True Evil” by Greg Iles. Apparently you learn this number in high school if you take chemistry. I never took chemistry and so I am just now learning about it.

The Fibonacci Sequence 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, … (add the last two to get the next) Used in Dan Brown’s book The Da Vinci Code. Brown also used Phi which is 1.618 which is also referred to as the golden number or the divine proportion.

23 – The Ancient Chinese believed numbers conveyed sexuality – evens for feminine and odds for masculine. They considered prime numbers to be the most masculine, conferring special status on 23 which is made up of two consecutive prime numbers and the only even prime number – two.

3 – represents the Trinity: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

7 – For Christians this is God’s number, some people think of 7 as lucky.

666 – The mark of the beast. “He also forced everyone, small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on his right hand or on his forehead so that no one could buy or sell unless he had the mark, which is the name of the beast or the number of his name. This calls for wisdom. If anyone has insight, let him calculate the number of the beast, for it is man’s number. His number is 666” (Rev. 13:16-18).

13 – unlucky

4 – in Chinese the pronunciation of the number 4 and the word for death are very similar and therefore the number 4 is unlucky.

Pi – 3.14 proper pronunciation is pee in Greek. Pi or ? is one of the most important mathematical constants, approximately equal to 3.14159. It represents the ratio of any circle’s circumference to its diameter in Euclidean geometry.

E – 2.718 The number e is occasionally called Euler’s number after the Swiss mathematician Leonhard Euler, or Napier’s constant in honor of the Scottish mathematician John Napier who introduced logarithms. The mathematical constant e is the unique real number such that the value of the derivative (slope of the tangent line) of f(x) = ex at the point x = 0 is exactly 1. The function ex so defined is called the exponential function, and its inverse is the natural logarithm, or logarithm to base e.

Culture God Movie Reviews Observations Politics

The Golden Compass – Yawwwwnnnn…

I was bored and nothing else was showing. I know, I know. I should not have thrown any money at this movie because it is a movie that is supposed to be about killing God. I saw the previews and I thought, “How can this be about killing God?” I hadn’t read this information on Snopes – click here to read it.  The first move isn’t about killing God, but there are all these kids with “Demons” which are these little animals that follow them around and talk, like a kindred spirit. This was disturbing because when have we ever thought of demons as being friendly little kindred spirits? Demons have always been associated with Hell and none of them have ever been sweet bunny rabbits that talk.

One thing about this first movie is that it just isn’t all that appealing. There are a lot of weird things, like “the Gobless” or “the Gobblers?” who are stealing kids and trying to separate them from their demons. Being separated from your demon puts you in a state of “Indecision”. I just didn’t get it.

With a little tweaking this movie could have been another Chronicles of Narnia or Lord of the Rings, except there isn’t anything redeeming about this movie. The little girl is sassy and rebellious, Nicole Kidman, while beautiful is frigid and frightening and while there was a part of me that wanted to like the movie and believe that all this information written about it was just a bunch of hype, but it’s not.

When I was younger my parents were fond of saying things like, “That is just a tool of the Devil”. I used to roll my eyes at them, they seemed so backward and like such Bible thumpers sometimes. Now that I am older I see it so clearly now. This movie, certain television shows and even some music is nothing more than a clever way to desensitize people to the truth.

I’m an optimistic person by nature. I see the good in people and in the world, but lately, I see more and more of the bad. So much sin is just accepted and sometimes even applauded.  Standing up for what is moral and right is now dangerous. If you want to be ridiculed, just take a stand for morality and truth. There is a world of people out there who laugh at the idea of God and absolutes. For those people I fear that they live in fairytale land where there is no evil, no God, no right and wrong. Culture and government decide what is and isn’t morale.  For their sakes I hope they open up their eyes. Take a look at the world around them, Google a few choice words on the internet and see the seedy underbelly of this world that is supposedly making progress.  Race and gender and sexuality no longer seem to be hot buttons, instead, what I see as the greater issue is tolerance and indifference. Like STD’s we treat the symptons, we spend millions on a cure instead of elminating the root of the problem.

I like to believe that the world is still filled with hope and love and that for a while longer these virtues will continue to shine bright in an ever-darkening world.

Merry Christmas.
